Is winter a good time to paint interiors?

Winter is quiet season for exterior painting, which makes it one of the best times to get the inside of the house done.

Quick answer

Winter is a good time for interior painting around Naperville. Exterior work is paused, so scheduling is easier, and modern low-odor paints dry well indoors as long as rooms stay heated to the product's minimum temperature. The main adjustments are ventilation in a closed-up house, longer drying times in cool or humid rooms, and planning around holidays.

Why winter works

From November to spring, exterior painting mostly stops, because paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures above the product's minimum. That frees up painters for interior work, so start dates are usually easier to get than in the spring rush.

Many homeowners also prefer to have the house painted before spring, so it is ready for graduation parties, guests or a sale.

Temperature and drying

Interior paints have a minimum application temperature, usually around 50 degrees, and they dry more slowly in cool rooms. A heated house is fine, but keep rooms at normal living temperatures day and night while the paint cures, and do not turn the heat down to save energy during the job.

Exterior walls and rooms over garages can be colder than the rest of the house. We check surface temperatures before painting those walls.

Ventilation in a closed-up house

With windows shut, odors linger longer. Low-odor, low-VOC paints help a lot, and we use them inside. Running bathroom and kitchen fans, opening a window a crack where possible, and keeping doors open between rooms all help the air move.

If anyone in the house is sensitive to smells, tell us; we can sequence rooms so you always have a comfortable space to retreat to.

Humidity and dry air

Chicago-area winters bring very dry indoor air, which helps paint dry, but humid rooms such as bathrooms and laundry rooms still need extra time. Run exhaust fans during and after painting.

Very dry air can make wood trim shrink and open small gaps at joints. We caulk those gaps before painting so the finish looks tight.

Planning around the holidays

Give us your holiday plans and guest dates, and we will schedule around them, or finish the rooms that matter before family arrives. Whole-house interiors are usually planned room by room so you can keep living in the house.

Our guide on preparing your home before painters arrive covers what to move and what to leave.

Good winter projects

Whole-house interior repaints, cabinet painting, trim and doors, basements, wallpaper, plaster repair and popcorn ceiling removal all suit the winter months.

Winter is also a good time to plan the exterior: choose colors, get the walkthrough done and book a spring start date. See interior painting for how a job runs.
