Cabinet refinishing and restaining in Naperville
For kitchens where the wood is worth keeping: a darker or lighter stain, a fresh clear coat, or the grain filled and finished so honey oak stops looking like 1994.
- Calls answered 24/7
- Restain, clear-coat or grain fill
- Doors sprayed off site

Quick answer
Cabinet refinishing in Naperville means keeping the wood visible: doors and drawer fronts are stripped or scuffed, restained to a new color or left as is, and sealed with a sprayed catalyzed clear coat. It costs less than replacement and, on solid oak or maple, lasts as long as the original finish. Call and we will look at a door before quoting the kitchen.
What the job involves
When to restain a kitchen instead of painting it
Painting hides the grain; refinishing shows it. On solid wood or good veneer, restaining to walnut or espresso gives a kitchen a different character without losing the wood. A worn clear coat with the stain still intact needs only a scuff and a new topcoat, which is the cheapest cabinet job we do.
Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled and go to a spray setup. Boxes and face frames are done in the kitchen with the room masked. The catalyzed clear coats we use cure hard enough for daily use within days.

The 3 versions of this job we get asked for
Stain color change
Going darker is the common request and the easier one: the old finish is stripped, the wood sanded to open the grain, and a gel or penetrating stain applied and wiped to the sample we agreed on. Going lighter than the existing stain means stripping fully and sometimes bleaching, so we test a door first and tell you honestly what the wood will do. Either way the new color is locked under two or three coats of sprayed clear so it does not wear off at the handles.

Clear-coat refresh
If the color still looks right but the finish is dull, sticky near the stove, or worn through at the pulls, the fix is a topcoat refresh. Doors are cleaned with a degreaser, scuff-sanded, spot-repaired where the stain has worn, and sprayed with a catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish. It is usually a two to three day job for a normal-sized kitchen in Naperville and the cheapest way to add another decade to solid wood cabinets that are structurally fine.

Grain filling on oak
Honey oak has deep, open grain that shows through any stain and even through paint. If you want a smooth, modern look while keeping a stained finish, we apply a grain filler after stripping, sand it flush, then stain and clear-coat. It roughly doubles the prep time per door but produces a flat surface that reads as a different species. It is also the step that separates a good painted-oak job from a cheap one, so we quote it as an option on every oak kitchen.
Choosing between the options
Refresh, restain or paint
Three routes for a wood kitchen, depending on what you want to see.
| Route | Keeps the grain | Prep required | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear-coat refresh | Yes, same color | Degrease and scuff | Color is fine, finish is worn |
| Restain | Yes, new color | Full strip and sand | Wood is good, color is dated |
| Paint | No | Degrease, scuff, prime | You want white or a solid color |
What moves the price
What decides the cost of this job
Pricing comes from a walkthrough of the actual surfaces.
- Door and drawer count. Pricing is per opening, so a kitchen with 40 fronts costs more than one with 24.
- Strip versus scuff. A color change needs full stripping; a clear-coat refresh does not.
- Wood species and grain. Oak takes longer to strip and fill than maple or cherry.
- Lighter or darker. Going lighter can mean bleaching and extra test doors.
- Boxes and interiors. Painting or finishing the inside of the boxes is a separate line.
- Islands and glazing. Islands, glass doors and glaze finishes add hand work.

Cabinet Refinishing & Restaining around Naperville
Almost every Naperville kitchen built between 1985 and 2000 came with builder-grade honey oak, and a smaller wave of dark cherry and maple followed in the newer subdivisions, so the two jobs we see most are lightening or filling the oak and darkening or refreshing the cherry. The wood in those kitchens is usually solid on the doors and veneer on the boxes, which refinishes well; particleboard from a later big-box replacement does not, and we will say so at the walkthrough.

FAQ
Questions about cabinet refinishing & restaining in Naperville
On solid wood, both last as long as the finish applied; a sprayed clear over stain is slightly harder-wearing than paint at the handles.
Yes, with a full strip, a grain filler and the right stain. We make the sample on your door so you see it before committing.
Boxes are done in one to two days; doors take five to ten days off site. You can use the kitchen without doors in between.
Yes. A vanity is usually a one to two day job and often done alongside the kitchen.
Interiors are normally left as they are. If you want them finished, it is quoted separately because it doubles the surface area.
Catalyzed clears have a solvent smell for a day or two; the spraying happens off site and the room is ventilated for in-place work.
